Bar soap and the pandemic

We all want to protect ourselves from germs and these days, mostly from COVID-19 that is continuing to haunt us.  We’re wearing masks, socially distancing, and washing our hands like crazy.  All these things help to protect us from the virus and keeping others safe as well.

Most of us are comfortable using liquid soap during the pandemic because it allows each user to pump out their own amount.  But what about bar soap?  It’s been having a moment lately as it’s more sustainable, easier to find and usually cheaper than liquid soap.  Not to mention it’s the only plastic-free soap option and can be used to clean hands, body, and face.

When bar soap is shared among several people, however, is it hygienic and safe to use or is it just a breeding ground for the virus?  Soap works against the virus because it destroys the lipid membrane that surrounds the virus, leading it to fall apart.  Simply put, science has shown us that a virus cannot live on any soap, including bar soap.  That’s why you are encouraged to wash your hands with soap and water as often as possible.

Keep in mind now that bacteria and viruses are two different things.  Bacteria cannot be transmitted from one person to another via a bar of soap.  You can choose to use liquid soap instead of bar soap but be mindful not to touch the pump as you may risk contamination from the container.  Liquid soap is normally in a plastic container and is very hard to use with touching the outside of the container.

Bars of soap are safe and hygienic to use and are just as effective as liquid soap.  However, bar soap is better on the environment because there is typical no packaging and therefore, no waste.  To take care of bar soap, once you are done, rinse it off and place it in a dry, open container.  If you keep it in a closed container, it’s an opportunity for humidity to build up on the surfaces to allow for bacteria to prosper.
